Science, Tobacco, and You ©. Visualizing the Effect of Tobacco

Six members of the Center for Integrating Research and Learning at Florida State University's National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, led by Dr. Sam Spiegel, worked with a team of researchers, educators and students to create Science, Tobacco & You, a multi disciplinary 4th and 5th grade science curriculum resource that engages students in developing skills in language arts, mathematics, social studies, and many other subjects. It allows a child to create a virtual representation of him or herself and see first hand what the effects of smoking or chewing tobacco are on his or her body. The cornerstone of the package is 22 activities contained in a Teacher/Student Guidebook supplemented by a dynamic CD-ROM and Web site, http://scienceu.fsu.edu.
In the fall of 1998, FSU contracted with the Florida Department of Health (FDOH) to distribute 1,835 Science kits to 4th and 5th grade students and teachers. The program was licensed to Training Solutions, Inc., (TSI) a Georgia-based corporation that leads the market in developing innovative interactive training programs. In fiscal year 2001, TSI launched product sales and the curriculum is used in 10,000 classrooms throughout the U.S. and Canada.
