FSU Products in the Marketplace
Blending science with fashion the Michael Davidson/ Florida State University neckties have become a good example of University creativity. The many necktie patterns are derived from original microphotographs of popular drinks as seen under the microscope, which are described on the label of the tie. Michael Davidson, FSU inventor at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, takes the photos with an optical microscope using polarized light. The result is a symphony of color and patterns (see Galleria)
In 1991 the New York based apparel company, Stonehenge Limited, marketed the first Davidson ties as their Cocktail Collection™ based on images of mixed drinks. Stonehenge had already gained popularity as the original licensee of the Jerry Garcia line of neckwear. The Davidson ties were offered through upscale retail stores such as Macy's, Lord and Taylor, and Dillards. The ties had an additional incentive that made them appealing. Purchasers were informed that for each $30 Cocktail Collection™ tie bought a charitable donation would be made to MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) in support of the organization's fight against drunk driving.
From 1991 until the termination of the license in 2001, Florida State received over $1 million in royalties. Sizable royalties in the form of donations were provided to MADD and the Johns Hopkins Children's Fund. Currently, the ties are offered locally, at the Mary Brogan Museum gift shop and on the Molecular Expressions Store.
